Brief 5 - futurism

A timeline of theories articulating the changes in design in relation to the processes

Brief

Produce a book that articulates futurism through the cycle of modernist to post modernist subtly in the form of a gradual timeline.

Background/considerations

Aim to tie in all aspects of theories and past future predictions that have come to light in today’s world of design. Illustrate this through the changes in graphic design through the timeline, essentially splitting the timeline into two – one being the theories, and the other being the layout and design of the book being dictated by these theories. Make subtle shifts in the design of the book that steadily moves through the transformations of thinking at that time. Think about technologies influence on print processes and design.

Mandatory requirements

- A range of printing processes
- Essays, journals and ideas that relate to our subject matter
- Past and present interviews from designers
- Personal views and predictions
- Extracts from own dissertations

Deliverables

Apply science experimentation to create the imagery to become the focus of the project and to apply within the design work, promotions, branding nn shit.

Brief 2 - concept + initial ideas

This year I am living with a 3rd year photography and journalism student from Leeds Met, i have known him for a while now and always been a fan of his photography work. We have been discussing about a collaboration for a while now and I feel that i am now ready to peruse this, whereas previously not entirely sure where I wanted to focus my work within graphic design, which direction i wanted to take my practice and whether my skills of a graphic designer would be good enough to work hand in hand on a brief with a photographer a basically do his photography work justice.

LINK TO HIS BLOG

We discussed ideas of what we could do as a brief together and decided upon creating a contemporary photography magazine, a magazine that would showcase his own work along with other photographers from around the world with artist profiles and interviews from professionals. The magazine would be the first of a quarterly magazine, allowing enough time to spent designing the magazine and source content, being a quarterly this also means that because the content will be greater, the price of each magazine will increase leaving enough money to add specialist print finishes and end up with a really crisp, considered, contemporary magazine.
The reason we settled on collaborating to design a magazine was because this would also go along side with one of his briefs this year; one of his briefs is to produce a piece on current affairs, which could be just a photography or a magazine or an article. Therefore we decided to combine this with our brief and have the magazine focussed on pressing issues within photography, their fore we could both work together sourcing content, he would be in charge of the photography and myself to do the design work.

These are some notes on some of the issues the magazine could feature:

- Modernism - renaissance
       - going against technology and back to a vintage style with photography.
                - apps allow vintage filters
                - hipster photography becoming mainstream
                - going back to film photography when digital is available

- futurism – accessibility of nice photography equipment with apps on phone.
                 - allowing anyone to be a photographer
                 - Are traditional techniques becoming obsolete
                 - dumbing down of photography, push of a button on a HD phone
                 - comparisons between professional and amateur

      - is it good for the industry? photographers being forced to push boundaries
      - narrowing down work for professionals

- also could include info on upcoming exhibitions as well as reviews and articles from previous exhibitions.

The magazine would be completely modern therefore the overall design aesthetic would have to follow, contemporary design, pushing boundaries, experimental, room for creative freedom - in order to keep up with competition from other quarterly magazines in the arts industry.

Brief 2 - photography magazine

Brief

A photographer is planning on creating a new quarterly, contemporary photography magazine. Showcasing photography from around the world, interviews with professionals with artist profiles as well as pressing matters within modern day photography. The magazine will be very high class, with strong print finishes and layout considerations. The photographer is looking a graphic designer to work hand in hand with to help with the layout and design considerations within the magazine, whilst also helping to source content, with just giving the magazine a strong visual aesthetic to help it stand out within the modern arts magazine sector.

Background/considerations

The magazine would have to fit the visual aesthetic of current quarterly arts magazine whilst still having a strong enough style to help it stand out amongst the competition. The magazine will not have a huge budget initially their fore all processes must be well considered. Needs to be a high end magazine, with the content being the full front for all the design considerations, allowing the content dictate the layout.

Mandatory requirements

Work with the photographer to come up with a visual style for the magazine that you both agree would help the magazine reach its full potential. Due to the magazine initially being ran by just 2 people you will have to also heavily help dictating and sourcing what content should be included within the magazine.

Deliverables

A strong visual aesthetic and layout for a magazine that can be applied to future copies as well as promotional material.

Brief 1 - album art.

Brief

The artist Bambooman is an up and coming produced who creates hip-hop, downtempo, futurebeats music. Develop visuals for the marketing of a release by this artist. I plan to put together a visual identity for this producer along with design material to go along side his new album 'lost souls', along with special edition alternative high class album design.

Background/considerations.

Remember artwork and identity is to reflect to overall feel of the music so must fit the purpose that it is intended for, however the experimental feel of the music should give you enough creative freedom to create something really nice. Must stand out amongst other artwork, help promote the artist and bring sales in.

Mandatory requirements

Must be low budget.
Include alternative special edition artwork.
Adhere to the bands guidelines

Deliverables

- identity
- new logo
- website mock up
- album artwork along with, vinyl covers and special edition album art.
- Promotional tour posters

Initial ideas:I dont think this will be one of the 4 main briefs that i will be undertaking for this module, seems like the kind of brief that is purely outcome based seen as i already know about most of the content that will of needed to be researched. Just purely about experimenting with design work and banging out outcomes. Probably spend 1 to 2 weeks on the brief which should give me enough time to finish off all the design work.

Here are some of the quick initial ideas that I have for the artwork;
- Experiment more with marble printing, master the process to produce some really cool patterns.
- Print processes - experiment with print processes, push the boundaries of print.
                           - innovative printing techniques
                           - try something different
- Print finishes - experiment with print finishes.
- screen print.

Just a few concepts, but it's hard to get what is in my head out into words. However this brief will focus on experimenting with print, trying innovative/different printing techniques to create some really interesting outcomes. However one challenge will be re-producing these techniques for mass production which will be something that i will have to figure out nearer the time.
Really excited for this brief and the opportunities that may fall from it.

Album artwork..

For the first of my briefs i decided to get in contact with a local musician called Bambooman 'kirk barley' and asked if it would be possible if i could design any artwork for him. I have been a fan of his music for a while now and he is definitely in the right genre to coincide with the type of artwork that i hope to produce, because of his experimental, downtempo, bass music it would give me the opportunity to be quite abstract with the outcomes, produce some artwork that is quite experimental to try to properly communicate his style of music through the artwork.
Here is the email that i sent him along with his reply; pretty happy with the reply i received. Although the artwork wont necessarily go live he has given me the all clear to create design work for his new singles also he said he will send me some clips and such to help influence the design work.
Hopefully he will like the work that i produce and it will maybe get used. Either way though should be a pretty good brief, with the creative freedom to produce some really experimental outcomes along with the opportunity to expand the brief to a huge range of possible outcomes.

what i want out of brief..

Ideas of what i would like to get out of my 10 briefs...
To try to incorporate as many my goals for level 6 as possible within my briefs I have tried to choose 10 briefs that would allow me to develop each of the skills that i wanted to this year.
Each brief should be mainly type driven, with the opportunity to produce some form of editorial design within the outcomes. Try to work on a lot of magazine/book work briefs to fully develop my type and layout skills. I also need to try to incorporate some of my illustration skills within some of the briefs so i does not just become a skill that i have spent the past few years developing and now just scrap it. I also would like to choose briefs that i have a personal interest in, a few problems that i faced in previous years was being 100% interested in a brief/ the subject matter, which lead to me producing sloppy outcomes because i was not fully engaging myself within it. If i choose briefs on subject matters that i have a personal interest in it will help me becomes more focused on the brief and hopefully the design work will improve because of this. The briefs that i choose also have to have room for creative freedom, try not to produce design work that is too commercial to help fill my portfolio with work that i would like to produce after uni, also with creative freedom gives the opportunity to try something different, be slightly experimental/abstract with processes to produce some really nice unique work.
