Brief
Produce a book that articulates
futurism through the cycle of modernist to post modernist subtly in
the form of a gradual timeline.
Background/considerations
Aim to tie in all aspects of theories
and past future predictions that have come to light in today’s
world of design. Illustrate this through the changes in graphic
design through the timeline, essentially splitting the timeline into
two – one being the theories, and the other being the layout and
design of the book being dictated by these theories. Make subtle
shifts in the design of the book that steadily moves through the
transformations of thinking at that time. Think about technologies
influence on print processes and design.
Mandatory
requirements
- A range of printing processes
- Essays, journals and ideas that
relate to our subject matter
- Past and present interviews from
designers
- Personal views and predictions
- Extracts from own dissertations
Deliverables
- Book

ask them if we could have a look at some of their previous
briefs and use it as part of their 3rd year.
- ask if they have any spare briefs
- help with content
- type us a brief up
Possible
subject areas.
- Futurism
- get content relevant to our dissertations – makes it easier to source content.
- interviews from photographers along side images.
- Photography in the future?
- Academic essays about photography – easy to gather content.
- Nice to work with – designing the magazine based around the content.
- Creative freedom
- interesting images

- make sure the content is interesting so the design could be designed around the content.
- look at a series of authors books and re-designing them.
- Essays – publish essays.
- Art theory – futurism.
What
company would be looking for book/magazine design, and would let us
design it.
________________________________________________
Put
a book together;
- nice layout
- bind – experiment with bind – original binding techniques, try something new and different.
- Marble edging of the book.
- contemporary
- experiment with printing techniques
- loads of print finished throughout [talk about the future]
- Futurism
- using a a series of essays from theorist.
- apply knowledge from dissertation.
- Journals on how technology has changed creative fields and the influence it is having on it.
- The idea of futurism within design, old techniques (letterpress being replaced by digital)
- a book illustrating a clash between traditional & digital.
- comparison between traditional - digital
- beginning of the book show the traditional techniques and the limitations which come with it apposed to the freedom of digital.
- book emphasising processing and Techniques
- Write up some of the content ourselves using our own knowledge.
- Futurism within the arts culture.
- (nintendo) drawing games – why? Teaching kids to draw on screen when they could pick up a pen a paper.
- Choose subject matters and type up opinions about to apply to the book.
- theoretical – lots of personal written work.
- Find images, and work around imagery.
- GATHER HELP FROM RICHARD.
- - [grounding specialists are starting to become more and more redundant due to the digital revolution]
-
narrow it down to a subject matter.
- RESEARCH BRIEF.
-
allows the content to dictate the whole of the design.
- Apply our own personal predictions on what will happen in the future.
- Get richard miles involved.
- stages in the book will represent the content and futurism and the design will show this.
-
comparisons within futurism shown with page layouts.
Brief
Finalizing
ideas
Instead
of trying to condense all the information into one book, which would
be confusing and difficult to structure, do a series of books
covering each of the print processes. Using each process to produce
each book;
- - letter press
- - metal casting
- - photo typesetting
- - Introduction to digital uprising
- - post modernism printing experimentation
Source
the information our selves
- - ask Richard
- - In a time line.
